HONK! FESTIVAL
ELM STREET ACTIVIST ART, 2017-19
The HONK! Festival of Activist Street Bands takes place annually in October in Somerville and Cambridge, MA. More than 600 musicians comes from around the U.S. and abroad to share their music in the streets and plazas of Davis and Harvard Squares. As a member of the volunteer Organizing Committee I have worked to develop an activist art making area to complement the musical focus of the festival. A major street in Davis Square – Elm Street – is closed to traffic for a day to create an arena for participatory art making led by artists. Some participating artists have focused on specific themes such as the climate crisis, the 5th extinction, unjust immigration policies, and murder of Black people by police.
Invited artists have included:
-
Sophy Tuttle, Extinction Stencils & Offerings for a Dying Planet
-
Rosalba Solis, La Pinata
-
Cedric Douglas, Rose Memorial Project
